G and B: A Multifunctional Workplace Designed by Mu-Chin Chiang

A Hidden Gem in New Taipei City

This project, designed by Mu-Chin Chiang, is a hidden gem situated in a boutique office building in the fast-growing redevelopment zone of New Taipei City. The G and B workplace is a multi-functional hub that combines privacy and intimacy with artistic and pragmatic elements, infused with oriental undertones.

Inspired by Chinese Wu-Xing philosophy, the design incorporates the symbol of water through the extensive use of black marble flooring. The flowing marble veins throughout the space bring philosophical connotations and symbolize the flow of universal energy and the gathering of fortunes.

The G and B workplace stands out with its unique approach to the evolving nature of business relationships. In the digital age, formal collaborations have transformed into intimate partnerships. Meetings are no longer solely for commercial purposes but also serve as a means of social interaction and a statement of corporate identity.

The realization of the design is a result of careful material selection and composition. The titanium paneling on the meeting room ceilings provides a rational statement, while the wood-veneered ceiling above the open lounge area creates a carefree and relaxed ambiance. The combination of materials from floor to ceiling creates a cohesive and balanced environment that influences the moods and behaviors of the people within.

The layout of the G and B workplace maximizes the use of space by excluding walls wherever possible. The flooring color segments the front section and inner areas, while glass screens subdivide the space into office, meeting room, and open-concept lounge areas, blurring the boundaries between them. The use of materials such as glass, metals, stones, woods, and curved forms creates a dynamic and visually appealing space. The metal band, subtly guiding the direction, leads to the different areas within the workplace.

Completed in December 2020, the G and B workplace is located in New Taipei City, Taiwan. The design project faced the challenge of utilizing the limited space of less than 100 square meters effectively. The layout was carefully planned into four sections: a supervisor office, an open meeting area, a private meeting area, and a lounge space for hosting events. Despite the compact size, the design achieves a spacious and uncluttered feel.

The G and B workplace is a testament to the power of interior design in influencing both moods and behavior. The combination of materials, the curved transparent cubicles, and the warm and inviting atmosphere created by the marble backdrops and gold trims all contribute to a space that is both informal and upscale, artistic and pragmatic.

This design was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2022. The award recognizes designs that exhibit outstanding creativity and resourcefulness, incorporating best practices in art, science, design, and technology. The G and B workplace stands as a testament to the designer's strong technical and creative skills, contributing to the improvement of quality of life and making the world a better place.
